23 t/m 25 november: The Overkill Festival - Immortality
Do you want infinite lives?
The Overkill is a 48+1 hour nonstop playful event focused on the digital gaming and film culture. The festival shows connections between media such as game, art and movies and their influence on today’s society. During an intense weekend, we invite people to take a deeper look at what we believe is one of the foundations of our society, playing!
This year's theme is Immortality:
“Do you want infinite lives?”, “Game Over; do you want to continue?”, “Do you want to save your lives?”, are questions regularly asked to gamers. Decontextualized from the game environment, they seem surreal, but not when you look at the many kinds of research about immortality and the many believers supporting it. These questions, which we want to reflect on, are related to the increasing researches against aging, the trans-humanism problematics in the homo deus age, and the eternal question of death.
The terms used in video games related to life and death are a great source of inspiration to begin our research about immortality. When you can collect hearts, recover from deadly injuries in a few seconds, play “God mode” or “start over” again and again, life takes a totally different dimension in the digital environment than it does in the “real” world.
The Overkill is an open platform, a flexible space for creative minds to meet and a special time to share thoughts and experiences. With our partners, we are bringing together artists, developers, entrepreneurs, students, and players to explore the edges of the gaming culture.
Multidisciplinary organization The Overkill is trying to look at different media and in different directions, combining the ideas of experts with the ones of users, the experience of artists and curators to the innovative eye of youngsters. Not afraid to be disturbed we want to encourage cross overs.
The festival regroups an art exhibition, a selection of indie games and a 48 hours movie program. Also presented at the festival, the most relevant game consoles from Retro to VR showcasing original, weird and classic games or projects. In an original setting, designed by artists, the festival presents an overkill of media, mostly interactive and often immersive. Taking over the location the festival is an immersive experience in itself.
